Limewash: Movement You Can See

Limewash is slaked lime and natural pigment, brushed onto the wall in broad cross-hatched passes. As it cures it calcifies into the surface, leaving a soft, cloudy variation — lighter here, deeper there — that looks sun-washed and organic rather than painted. It's fully matte, it's breathable, and it's the finish behind most of the feature walls filling design feeds right now.

  • Where it excels: fireplace walls and chimney breasts, primary bedroom feature walls, dining rooms, and entries — anywhere a flat painted wall feels lifeless
  • The palette: warm whites, greige, clay, terracotta, olive, and deep smoky tones — the natural-pigment range suits Henderson's warm light exceptionally well
  • Character control: the amount of movement is a technique decision. We can brush it subtle and misty or bold and dramatic — which is exactly what the sample boards settle before we start

Roman Clay: Depth You Can Touch

Roman clay is a troweled finish — applied in thin overlapping layers with a steel trowel, then burnished smooth. The result reads like suede or soft stone: no sand, no grit, completely smooth under your hand, but with a gentle tonal mottling that gives the wall depth a roller can't produce. Where limewash is rustic and atmospheric, Roman clay is tailored and modern.

  • Where it excels: powder rooms, offices, media walls, and full feature walls in contemporary homes — it's the finish we install most in Inspirada and Cadence
  • Sealing: in bathrooms and high-touch areas we topcoat clay with a matte sealer or wax so it wipes clean without losing its softness
  • Repairs and evolution: clay layers, so future scuffs can be touched in by hand rather than repainted corner to corner

How We Get the Wall Ready

Both finishes are only as good as the substrate. New drywall needs the right mineral or bonding primer so the finish keys in properly; previously painted walls need de-glossing and priming; and Henderson's 1990s walls with old sponge or glaze work need genuine correction — sanding and skim-coating — before a mineral finish can sit clean. We scope that prep honestly in the quote, because skipping it is how limewash projects fail.

Every project is approved from physical sample boards made in your tone and technique, viewed in your room's light. Deciding between these finishes and something glossier? See how Venetian plaster compares.
